Geography Terms

Archipelago = a group or chain of many islands

Dune = a mound or ridge of loose sand shaped by blowing winds

Mountain = a land mass that projects clearly above its surroundings and is higher than a hill

Atoll = a coral island consisting of a reef surrounding a lagoon

Fjord = a long, narrow inlet or arm of the ocean bordered by high cliffs

Ocean = any of the large bodies of water into which the great ocean is divided

Badlands = A region marked by intricate erosional sculpturing, scanty vegetation, and fantastically formed hills

Forest = a dense growth of trees and underbrush covering a large area

Peninsula = a piece of land almost completely surrounded by water

Bay = a small area of sea or lake partly enclosed by dry land

Geyser = a hot geothermal spring that shots scalding water and steam high into the air

Plain = a large, flat or level area of land

Beach = a shore of a body of water covered by sand, gravel, or larger rock fragments

Glacier = a large mass of slowly moving ice

Plateau = an elevated, mostly level area of land

Butte = an isolated, rocky hill or mountain with a small flat top

Gulf = a large inlet of ocean or sea that is partially surrounded by land

Prairie = a large area of grasslands in the U.S.

Canal = an artificial waterway for navigation or for draining or irrigating land

Hill = a usually rounded natural elevation of land lower than a mountain

River = a natural stream of water of usually considerable volume

Canyon = a deep, steep-sided narrow valley...small versions of these are chasms, gorges, or ravines

Iceberg = a large mass of land ice floating in the sea

Sea = a body of salt water of second rank more or less landlocked

Cape = a fairly large piece of land extending into a body of water...small _____ are often called points or spits

Island = a piece of land completely surrounded by water

Sound = an arm of the sea, or ocean, forming a wide channel between an island and the mainland; the ocean inlet is roughly parallel to the coast

Cave = a natural underground chamber or series of chambers open to the surface

Isthmus = a narrow strip of land that connects two larger areas of land and narrowly separates two large bodies of water

Swamp = a marsh with trees...contain more water and deeper water than marshes

Channel = a man-made channel of water joining lakes or rivers, or connecting them with the sea

Jungle = an impenetrable thicket or tangled mass of tropical vegetation

Tundra = a huge treeless plain bordering the Arctic Ocean

Cliff = a very steep or vertical slope

Lagoon = a shallow body of water separated from the ocean by reefs or low strips of land

Valley = a long, narrow hollow in the Earth's surface lying between two higher areas

Continent = one of the seven great divisions of land on the globe

Lake = a large inland body of water larger than a pond

Volcano = an opening in the Earth from which hot gases, smoke and molten lava are emitted

Delta = the area of sediments formed at the mouth of a river

Marsh = a low, water-soaked, poorly drained area with thick tall grasses and reeds

Waterfall = a very steep descent of the water of a stream

Desert = a barren land area containing little or no vegetation

Dam = a body of water confined by a barrier Mesa = an isolated flat-topped natural elevation usually more extensive than a butte and less extensive than a plateau
Strait = a narrow space or passage Harbor = a body of water protected and deep enough to furnish a port Reef = a chain of rocks or coral or a ridge of sand at or near the surface of water
